"Their
motto is 'ass-kickin' blues' and this hard workin' bar band from
California displays lots of chutzpah tackling head-on a mixture of
material other blues acts might be hesitant to handle, as well as laying
down a nice set of originals. Mule Newman himself is obviously a long-time
veteran of the rock and blues wars as his taste for 1960's Young
Rascals tunes ("Do You Feel It", "What is the
Reason") gives us clues as to who his early influences on B-3 were
(Felix Cavaliere). For those who don't know, The Rascals were the best
White R&B band of the 1960's and they opened a lot of kids' eyes/ears
to Black music, so Mule is right on with his coverage. Also, one can
easily imagine a rowdy crowded dance floor on Friday Night at 12:30a.m. as
Mule rips into "Can You Feel It." And there lies the major
strength of the Mule Newman Band. They are obviously a favorite on
the blues circuit of Southern California, and they have a formula down pat
that comes from filling dance floors as much of the 14 tracks favor
up-tempo funky feel and rhythm. Of his originals, "Fakin' It" is
tops with imaginative lyrics and a solid groove. " Killin' Me With
Kindness" is the best track of the lot with outstanding lyrics and a
juicy guitar solo. Too bad it's not a minute or two longer. Mule Newman's
tight little band are obviously making friends, fans and a living from
those bar room blues in Southern California. 4 bottles for a nice
little independent production that has an abundance of hard work and
sincerity holding it together."
